Response to Auxiliary Aids for Children with Disabilities consultation

The Commission supports the proposals put forward by the Department for Education for the implementation of the duty on schools to provide auxiliary aids and services as part of its reasonable adjustment duty at the earliest opportunity, without regulations.

Background

The Department will be aware that the proposals and recommendations in this consultation were formulated in discussion with the EHRC. The consultation draft of the Chapter on Reasonable Adjustments and Auxiliary Aids in the EHRC draft Code for Schools was developed to reflect the approach to commencement and implementation set out in this consultation.

We are supportive of an approach that seeks to build on the provisions that schools already make but are also cognisant that any regression from these may put this approach in jeopardy, and that progress is still needed to make mainstreaming a real choice as well as practical for the provider.
